Building a Motor

Set up your motor from the hardware dimensions, then simulate its thrust.

If you're working on your own solid motor, start here. Set up the case, grains and nozzle from the dimensions you're building to, then run a thrust simulation. Once you have a static fire, import the trace and compare it with the prediction.

Create or clone a motor#

A new motor starts as a 29 mm BATES template you can reshape right away. You can also clone one of your motors or a motor someone else has shared. Cloning is useful when you want to fork the design: keep the flown version as-is, then change the copy for the next iteration. Saving just asks for a name and an optional description.

Around the editor#

The editor pairs a properties panel on the left with a live cutaway schematic. The panel's icon rail switches between four sections; selecting one highlights that component in the schematic, and clicking a part in the schematic switches the panel to match.

Overview

The motor as a whole: total weight, the ejection-charge setup, and the static-fire data section (Static Fire Data).

Casing

The case hardware — diameter, length, wall and liner thickness, forward closure, dry mass, optional thrust-ring dimensions, and a CG override for measured values.

Propellant

What burns: the propellant pick, grain type and dimensions, and the computed propellant mass with an override for your weighed cast.

Nozzle

The converging–diverging profile — throat, inlet and exit diameters, overall length, and an efficiency factor for the simulation.

The schematic updates when an edit is committed. It shows dimensions for the selected component and marks the motor's CG. Use the status button to check design issues, or open Performance to see the latest simulation results.

The editor checks the geometry as you work, so invalid dimensions are caught before simulation. It flags problems such as a grain stack longer than the chamber or a nozzle throat wider than its inlet in the relevant field. Configuring a Motor walks through each section in detail.
